Introduction to Lauren Shulkind
What led Lauren Shulkind to pursue a career in writing?
Lauren Shulkind was always interested in writing from an early age. She loved creating stories and spending time writing poetry, but it wasn’t until she read “The Catcher in the Rye” that she realized she could have a career in writing. After reading the novel, she decided to become a writer and enrolled in Columbia University’s MFA program in Creative Writing. While at Columbia, she met her future husband, who encouraged her to continue pursuing her dream of becoming a published writer. After completing her MFA, she relocated to New York City where she continues to write and publish books.
How has Lauren Shulkind’s writing changed since she first started out?
Since Lauren Shulkind first started out as a writer, her work has evolved significantly. Her early novels were character-driven and focused on relationships between people, but as her career has progressed, she’s begun to explore more complex themes such as grief and identity. Additionally, her latest books feature more explorations of New York City and its inhabitants, which reflects the city itself as an ever-changing entity. Her writing has also become more polished over time; readers now appreciate the intricacies of her plots and the skillful way she weaves together different elements of storytelling into cohesive narratives.
What are some of the biggest challenges Lauren Shulkind faces as a writer?
As a child, I loved spending summers at my grandparents’ place in Connecticut. There was always so much to do: swimming in the pool, going for walks on the beach, playing games in the yard. We would all sit around the dining room table and tell stories. My grandmother was a great storyteller, and even though she wasn’t alive to see it, her stories have stayed with me throughout my life.
One of my favorite childhood memories was telling a story about a magical fairy who lived in a beautiful garden. My grandparents would laugh and smile while I spoke, and it felt like they were right there with me. Even now, after all these years have passed, I can still remember every detail of that story – and I know that no matter how old I get, I will never forget how much fun it was to share it with them.”
Lauren Shulkind is a serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. She co-founded Inclined Life, an online resource for people interested in starting their own businesses. Additionally, she is the founder of the One Young World Summit, a gathering of young leaders from around the world. Her work has earned her recognition from publications like Forbes and The Huffington Post.
Lauren Shulkind is a writer, traveler, and photographer whose work focuses on capturing the beauty of inclination. Originally from Massachusetts, Shulkind now lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two daughters. She has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, and other publications, and her work has been exhibited at museums around the world.
In 2012, Shulkind published her first book, Inclined: A Book of Photographs from a Life in Pursuit of Beauty. The book is a collection of portraits and essays about people who have chosen to pursue their own inclinations — be they artistic or spiritual pursuits — in defiance of what society expects of them. Shulkind’s accompanying exhibition traveled to venues including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Jewish Museum in New York City.
Shulkind’s second book, Ladders: Notes From a Young Woman Who Has Fallen Down Too Many Times to Get Up Again (and Wants You To Follow Her) was released in May 2018. It is a memoir about growing up poor and finding comfort in climbing ladders — an activity that became therapeutic for Shulkind as she navigated difficult family moments.
In an interview with The Paris Review, Shulkind shared her hope that Ladders will help readers see themselves more clearly: “I want people to feel like they’re not alone when they’re
Advice for Young Professionals
When you’re young, your life is all about chasing your dreams. But as you get closer to 30 and face the reality of actually achieving them, you might find yourself feeling a little bit antsy.
“We haven’t yet faced any real challenges or setbacks. We’re not used to feeling out of our depth.”
So what do you do when the freeze frame of your twenties starts playing back in your head and all the things you used to take for granted (like health insurance) start disappearing? Here are three tips from Lauren to help you stay on track:
1. Set smaller goals rather than chasing the big ones. Instead, focus on taking tiny steps that will lead you closer to your goal. For example, if you want to start a blog but don’t have any money saved up, start by writing one post a week instead of trying to write an entire article in one go.
2. Find mentors and collaborators who can help guide and support you along the way. It’s important not only to have a goal in mind but also someone who can help motivate and support you while you pursue it. Look for people who have been where you are now
